Daryll-Ann – Spring

Miracles do happen after all, because Daryll-Ann is back. With the original line-up, no less. Between 1988 and 2003, the Dutch indie band delivered a steady stream of brilliant records that earned themselves a spot in the Netherlands’ alternative pop canon. Early in 2004, the band quit abruptly, but now, twenty years later, they make their long-awaited return with comeback album ‘Spring’.

“It doesn’t feel like a rebirth, though”, says Jelle Paulusma, one of the band’s two songwriters. “It’s the idea that everything is a cycle. You might fall down, but you can always get back up, there always comes another chance.”

Things started snowballing when Excelsior Recordings, where Daryll-Ann released their best-known records, asked the band to perform at the label’s 25th birthday party at the legendary Paradiso venue in Amsterdam. Being back on stage together brought such a rush of energy that the group decided to make a new album.

Listening to spring, it’s crystal clear why Daryll-Ann decided to get back together. The musical chemistry between the band’s members drips off each song in thick, goopy globs. From the melancholy, spacey ‘Everything I Knew’ to the just-right roughness of ‘A Note About Time’, nothing on this record would have you believe that this is the band’s first new material in twenty years.

Even though the band themselves might say that it’s not a rebirth, the future of Dutch-bred indie suddenly looks a lot brighter with the coming of ‘Spring’.

Dawn Brothers – Alpine Gold

Anyone who sees the Dawn Brothers play, inevitably gets sucked into the musical whirlwind soaring across the stage. It’s a clash of sounds and styles, with rock, folk, blues and soul being mixed and stirred into an irresistible cocktail. It’s this feeling of ‘what’s going on here’ that makes Rotterdam-based Dawn Brothers a band you want to be part of yourself. A band with perfect musical chemistry, one that oozes the joy of playing and has the love for music racing through each and every vein.

With their no-nonse mentality, the Dawn Brothers seamlessly fit into the modest community of the famous port city. But don’t be fooled by their nonchalance: their contemporary interpretation of roots music shows that here stands a group of musicians who know damn well what they’re doing.

This is also apparent on their new record ‘Alpine Gold’, which will be released later this year through Excelsior Recordings and on which the band casts a wide array of spells upon their audience.

If the basis of the dish is good, you really only need a couple of quality ingredients. Everything else is just noise and distraction. This also goes for the Dawn Brothers, for whom their new album ‘Alpine Gold’ marks a return to the energy of their first record. No frills, no bullshit, they just wanted to make a good album. The songs that ended up on ‘Alpine Gold’ were written and recorded within the span of two months. This happened in the Electric Monkey studio in Zaandam, where the band, together with producer Paul Willemsen, set out to record a slab of musical magic and mystique.

They may be modest by nature, but on ‘Alpine Gold’, the Dawn Brothers are not afraid to open Pandora’s Box and flood their listeners with a wave of exciting, original and creative music that will leave them mystified.

Pale Puma – Haunted By Dreams That Were Never My Own

‘’Change your eyes / walk the line / feelings rise / down my spine’’ zingt Pale Puma-frontman Django Duijns op ‘The World Below’, een van de singles van het nieuwe album ‘Haunted By Dreams That Were Never My Own’. Het nummer gaat over een ontmoeting met een geest uit het verleden, die zich complimenteus opstelt, maar achter je rug om heel negatief over je is.

Liefhebbers van de alternatieve gitaarmuziek uit de jaren 80 en 90 zullen in het nummer wellicht de typische jangle en melancholische sound van acts als The Stone Roses en Felt herkennen. Duijns (29) benadrukt echter dat het in september te verschijnen album geen sombere plaat is: “Het is geen low energy of depressieve plaat, maar een verzameling van up-tempo shoegazeliedjes met open teksten. Het album heeft een heel hoopvolle boodschap.”

Naast de shoegaze van bands als DIIV, Beach Fossils en Alvvays, liet Amsterdammer Duijns zich bij het schrijven van de nieuwe plaat ook inspireren door onder meer Nick Drake. De single ‘Lost In Pink Moon’ is een directe verwijzing naar de alom gerespecteerde folkartiest. De Engelsman wordt weleens de ‘Van Gogh van de muziek’ genoemd, refererend aan zijn tragische levensverhaal. Dit levensverhaal werd in 2021 tentoongesteld door kunstenares Danielle Lemaire in het Stedelijk Museum Breda.

Die tentoonstelling zette Django Duijns aan het schrijven: “[…] Ik koppel het aan de depressie die ik zelf heb gehad, en mijn autisme. Dat zijn thema’s waar ik veel over schrijf.”

Nick Drake was pas 26 toen hij overleed aan een overdosis antidepressiva. Op diezelfde leeftijd begon drie jaar geleden voor Duijns juist een nieuw begin. “In die periode begon ik mijn depressie te overwinnen. Ik wist dat ik me volledig wilde storten op Pale Puma en vond mijn andere bandleden.”

Duijns zegt dat dat gevoel van ‘een nieuw begin’ terug te horen zal zijn op het nieuwe Pale Puma-album. “Dat je in jezelf en jouw missie blijft geloven.”

Jezelf niet verloochenen en trouw blijven aan wie je bent, het is de boodschap van iemand die lang met zichzelf in de knoop zat en geworsteld heeft met het leven, maar nu zijn stem en zijn plek in de wereld gevonden lijkt te hebben.
